Requirements for Dynamics Lab Research Credit
In order to insure that your research experience will be
educational and beneficial for you as a student, the following
requirements for research credit have been established. After
reading and agreeing to the following, you should use your web
browser's PRINT command to print a copy of this form, sign and date
it, and return to your sponsor.
1) Obtain your sponsor's approval for your planned
research activities.
2) Work at least 3 hours per week on lab-related
activities for each credit hour enrolled (e.g.: for 3 credits, 9
hours). Your involvement is expected to be conscientious and
responsible (e.g., prompt, courteous, respectful with both department
members and participants in experiments).
3) Provide assistance in research projects. This is likely to
include all or some of these activities:
- Attending laboratory meetings
- Reading written materials (journal articles, book chapters,
etc.) regarding the research topic, as suggested by your graduate
sponsor or Professor Freyd.
- Active involvement in running experiments
- Active involvement in collecting stimulus materials for
experiments
- Active involvement in stimulus creation and modification for
experiments
- Active involvement in data coding and or/analysis
4) Turn in a Paper and a Letter to YOUR SUPERVISOR on the Monday
of The Last Week of Classes:
- The Paper: a (hard-copy) typed paper outlining what you have learned
over the course of the quarter -- to be turned in to your supervisor no later
than 4PM the Monday of dead week (last week of classes). The paper should
be a short report (2-3 pages is fine) on your experience as an RA -- what
you did, what you learned, what it meant to you.
- The Letter: a (hard-copy) typed letter written for Professor Freyd and
delivered to your supervisor in a sealed envelope outlining what you have
learned over the course of the quarter -- to be turned in no later than 4PM
the Monday of dead week. The letter can be short but must report to Professor
Freyd on your evaluation of your experiences with your supervisor.
- If the paper and letter and the supervisor's recommended grade is
not turned in to Professor Freyd by the deadline then you will get a no-pass
for the 401 course and you will not be permitted to continue in the lab.
You are responsible for getting the paper and letter to your supervisor
by 4 PM on the Monday of dead week. Your supervisor is responsible for
getting the paper, the letter in the sealed envelope, and a recommended grade,
to Professor Freyd by 4 PM on the Friday of the last week of classes of the
term.
- If you are reporting directly to Professor Freyd as your supevisor then
you must turn a paper in directly to Professor Freyd by no later than 4PM
the Monday of dead week. You do not need to turn in a letter.
- Honors students getting 401 credit for work on their honors projects must
turn in either their final honors paper or, if the honors paper is not complete,
a progress report, directly to Professor Freyd by no later than 4PM the Monday
of dead week. You do not need to turn in a letter.
5) Keep us informed:
- Keep a record of daily lab-related activities, problems,
revelations
- Exchange information regarding ongoing projects with faculty
or graduate sponsor.
