It is my policy to mail all letters of recommendation directly to the recipients. I do not return completed letters of recommendation to the applicants. (I will make an exception only in the case of my current graduate students applying for certain fellowships and internships. Otherwise there are no exceptions.) Mailing directly to the institution is consistent with the process used by undergraduate admissions and job search committees. It is also consistent with the majority of graduate admissions committees. My policy typically reduces the work loads of the applicants and letter writers. Most important, my policy is intended to protect the integrity of the admissions process.
