It is my policy to mail all letters of recommendation directly to the recipients. I do not return completed letters of recommendation to the applicants. The primary reason for this policy is so that I can write freely. This freedom pertains particularly to my ability to express high praise. In addition, mailing directly to the selection committee is consistent with the process used by undergraduate admissions and job search committees. It is also consistent with the majority of graduate admissions committees. My policy is intended to protect my ability to write honestly and freely and to protect the integrity of the selection process.
